Tony Romo plays blitz chess vs Grandmaster | Game Review

Featured is a blitz chess game between former star quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys turned football color commentator for CBS, Tony Romo, and 26-year-old American chess Grandmaster, Marc Tyler Arnold. If you’re like me, a fan of chess and NFL football, you’ll likely enjoy observing how Tony Romo plays speed chess.

I’m a self-taught National Master in chess out of Pennsylvania, USA who was introduced to the game by my father in 1988 at the age of 8. The purpose of this channel is to share my knowledge of chess to help others improve their game. I enjoy continuing to improve my understanding of this great game, albeit slowly. 1. Romo revolutionized football commentating, and Jerry revolutionized chess commentating!

  2. "king is flushed from his pocket" — I see what you did there πŸ˜‰

  3. what do you think of the Niners this year Jerry? their defense is suffocating.

  4. i have no idea what Jerry looks like, but somehow I can still imagine the smug smirk on his face as he makes all these football puns.

  5. I love the football references in your commentary! I'm surprised you didn't mention that Blitz is a formation in football too πŸ™‚

  6. 0:52 Check out the 1994 Texas State High School playoff game between Plano East and John Tyler πŸ™‚ Plano East trailed 41-17 with just under 3 minutes left in the game, they score to make it an 18-point game after a failed 2-point conversion. They recovered the ensuing onside kick and scored another TD to make it 41-30 after the extra point. They then recovered the second onside kick and scored again to make it 41-37 with under 50 seconds left. Then they recovered their third consecutive onside kick, and scored again to take a 44-41 lead with seconds left.

Then John Tyler returned the ensuing kickoff for the game-winning TD, making the whole comeback moot, so maybe your point stands! But I think an amateur beating a GM would be more akin to a high school team beating the NFL's postseason All-Pro team.

edit: P.S., great job on working in all the football puns, especially some of the more subtle ones like "compact formation" – nice πŸ˜€ Good work on the video. I think Romo handled himself pretty well, all things considered, managing to save a tiny bit of face after the Nf3 blunder and…well, literally every Queen move he made lol. He managed to last longer than I was expecting and he showed he at least has a grasp on the game beyond just how the pieces move. I was hoping he'd play Qxa8 and let her go down guns blazing, but alas.

  7. As it was a blitz game, I'm surprised Romo didn't run out of time and get a penalty for delay of game haha

  8. Tony botched this game like he was playing against Seattle in the playoffs 😬😬😬. Great video Jerry, happy to have another game breakdown!!!

  9. I feel like more people than usual are going to dislike this video due to the relatively surface level analysis of a low quality game, but I think ultimately this was a good video as it knows its audience (viewers coming in from mention of Tony Romo) and can hopefully grow the chess community. Jerry's additional excitement from this chess/football crossover is a plus as well!

  10. I was sincerely waiting for a surprise from Romo. but no chance

  11. Welp, its a rare chance for a beginner to play against a GM so yeah

  12. It's no wonder he never won anything. Terrible moves. Imagine if a chess Grand Master had Toni Romo's body.

  13. I wish you called blacks pocket clean instead of nice lol

  14. Romo was out of book early with the Spider 2 Y Banana opening.

  15. I wonder who's the best soccer player at chess

  16. Love your videos, I liked how you slowed this speed chess game down. Wish you did this for the others that you cover live, lichess etc…maybe pick a few of those and dissect them as you did this one. πŸ‘

  17. Around move 13, why did we never see e4 takes f2, fork on the rooks?

  18. Not even sure why you showed us this game.

  19. So not a fan of the Scandinavian, then…? (Yes, I know this specific game is not one)

  20. The constant football analogies were awesome! Well played! I feel like Romo actually had a few small ideas, a few pins, etc. Very cool to see.

  21. I like the football jargon. It somehow fits perfectly.

  22. Thank you for the vid. Chess is the best game ever ^_^

  23. +ChessNetwork Fan of chess and NFL football? Man of good taste

  24. I am sorry I snored because of your background music

  25. This game is really stupid. both side played like newbies

  26. Man the way he hyped it up at the beginning I thought Tony Romo actually won

  27. Pls chessnetwork post more vids about current events in the chess world!

Your level of chess knowledge just speaks to me more. Agadawfulmator is good for the social stuff, but sucks at chess.

    Miss you

  28. The casual volume of football puns are incredible here.

  29. Jerry, I love you ❀️🏈

  30. What would you estimate Tony Romo's elo to be? 800 ish?

  31. At this point I don’t want to see what Jerry looks like. It would kill the legend…

  32. So you’re saying there’s a chance

  33. i love all of the references to football lingo.. take a time out.. shoot through the gap.. etc LOL.. queen is way "off sides" pawns moving "down field". king "flushed from the pocket" when you have "no time on the clock"

  34. Tony might have taken too many blows to the head. What a patzer!

  35. The Klitschkos play much better chess than Tony Romo, and they have taken far more blows to the head.
