The Battle for Blitz Begins: 2019 World Rapid & Blitz Chess Championship

It’s Day 4 of the World Rapid and Blitz Chess Championship hosted by GM Robert Hess and GM Yasser Seirawan!

Most of the world’s strongest players are competing. The open section includes the reigning world champion in standard chess and blitz, Magnus Carlsen, along with Maxime Vachier-Lagrave and Hikaru Nakamura. The 2018 world rapid champion Daniil Dubov is also there to defend his title.

The location of the world rapid & blitz is the VIP zone of the Grand Sports Arena of the Luzhniki Olympic Complex along the Luzhniki embankment in Moscow. It is one of the biggest multifunctional sports complexes in the world. Built in the 1950s, it served as the Olympic Park of the 1980 Summer Olympics.

The stadium and the surrounding areas were extensively renovated and upgraded on the occasion of the 2018 FIFA World Cup, turning it into one of the biggest and more modern sports facilities in Europe, with a capacity of 81,000 spectators.

  1. Great work, guys. You actually work longer than the players.

After the 12 move miniature, did Eric throw his chair across the room?

  2. Ok, I have to correct Robert Hess here. Every piece still on the board except for the queens (and half of them not even developed yet) is not an endgame. It's called the opening. 9:20 I'm giving this video a thumbs down for Hess calling that first game with Kramnik an endgame about 10 times within 30 seconds.

  3. You should really title your Youtube videos better than this! It is confusing. Why not add "Rapid Day 2", "Bitz Day 1", etc.?
    Other than that, good job!

  4. The quote of the day … "Vidit … a 2730 player in real life, but a much stronger player in blitz". Yasser Seirawan. lol I couldn't agree more. Blitz isn't real life or even real chess, for that matter. 48:30

  5. I'm now a believer in this Firouzja kid. He just spanked Nakamura with black. 1:15:00

  6. Sorry but I have to say this.
Love the commentary and bantering but why wont you guys leave the live board live and stop moving pieces around
Its very annoying. Waiting for the actual players to make their moves playing along trying to anticipate. But you guys keep hijacking the board totally ruining the experience. I can see doing that during a classical game but during a blitz !!?? how annoying.
Frankly don't care what you guys would to if you were in this tournament I only care about what the actual players are doing.

  7. Hikaru is such a pussy when he faces Magnus its a joke

  8. Why not follow Carlsen every game? I feel like that's what people want to see and that's what Saint Louis Chess team does when they cover blitz events (follow the tournament leader or expected champion).

  9. Yasser at his best with Robert. Commentating without need to use the mouse.
