Blitz Chess #394: Bogo-Indian Defense, Grünfeld variation

By move 9 there is a great deal of symmetry to the position, and only 4 moves later would we observe not only a great structural imbalance, but also a piece imbalance. Given time, it’s difficult enough to properly assess a position type where one side has connected passed pawns along with a queen and pawn, against an enemy’s 2 minor pieces and a rook. How exactly to manage such an imbalanced position with blitz time controls? This was a 5|0 time control game, where I was playing with the black pieces.

  1. hi jerry
have you ever explained balance or imbalance in one of your videos? How important is it to know those terms?

  2. My dad just asked me to use headphones for this video because he has associated Jerry's voice with bullet tournaments which stress my father out — even just to hear lol

  3. This was a great game. I'm so glad you chose to trade the queen off.

  4. Jerry. Please play a 5/0 game with me on Lichess.org

    My username is Thebob017

  5. Thanks so much Jerry for another video. I watch all of yours now and I think they (along with other stuff) are helping me improve. More and more I find myself finding the same moves you do!

  6. That was very interesting to watch, well done Jerry.

  7. That combination where you got the two minor pieces and a rook for your queen and pawn was incredible. Great video, Jerry!

  8. Very cavalier of you giving up your queen. Or nice judgement, let's say. Very entertaining at all events. As always, thank you, Jerry.

  9. Jerry .. could you please play more blitz/rapid tournaments? 🙂 I love watching 3-15 minute time controls. Sometimes it's tough to keep up with the bullet! Though I appreciate all the content you put up. Keeeeeep it up

  10. Oh lord when I saw the queen sacrifice for the minor pieces I wanted you to play that so bad, glad to see it panned out well!

  11. I like how you talk as you are playing, chess terminology is interesting.

  12. Nice game ! bad Mouse Slip at the end

  13. Why you would not play ….39 Rxa7 is beyond me. Great game anyway, was so happy when you indulge in the queen sac 🙂

  14. Sounded like you introduced yourself as Cherry.

  15. That knight+bishop+rook mate would've been really cool. Interesting game and imbalance!

  16. Lol funny mouse slip, really bad one but interesting inbalance those pawns where a problem though

  17. When Jerry suggested that line with 16…. c3 17. Nb3 cxb2 18. Nxa5 bxa1=Q I was a bit dubious. So I paused took a minute to count material and essentially Jerry was a pawn up (Queen and pawn v knight + bishop + rook) and I realised that this meant that it objectively had to be good for black. Then I thought, exactly as Jerry did, that white's two connected passed pawns supported by a rook and queen had to be very decent compensation and that got me so scared I thought to myself – that line's got to be unsound, don't do it. Then when the analysis came and the computer said it was +1.15-ish at the end of that line I was quite surprised xD

  18. Wow, you were very lucky at the end, Jerry

  19. GREAT GAME, im sad you missed that free pawn at the end though XD

  20. Hey your videos are really good and I hope you wont get bored of uploading these for a while.
Thanks for making these videos theyre great entertainment!

  21. I was yelling, "Just take the pawn!" Glad the computer at least helped you see it.
