Battersea Blitz Chess Playoff: GM Simon Williams vs. IM Bartholomew [Game 1]

On December 6, 2016, I played in a 13-round blitz tournament organized by the Battersea Chess Club in London, England. The time control was 3 minutes with a 2 second increment.

GM Simon Williams and I were tied with 12/13 points at the end of the event, and this is the first of three playoff games between us to determine the overall tournament winner.

White: GM Simon Williams (2485)
Black: IM John Bartholomew (2448)

  1. I really hope you play another chess rivals against Simon!

  2. CONGRATULATIONS!!!!! You're the best John!!!!! xD

  3. John I like the shirt you wore. It looks nice 🙂

  4. It appears as though Mr. Williams was drinking a beer while playing. Now that is how chess it's done.

  5. It took us 2017 years, but THIS is how a chess game should be displayed. Just perfect.
Side angle so you can see the players thinking and face, and see the board in 3D, and a 2D live board right above. 5 stars ***

  6. Hey John,
quick question. Would you be open to doing a series on openings? I've been watching your channel for a few months now and absolutely love your lessons on chess fundamentals and climbing the rating ladder. I'm routing for you to get that GM brotha! Thanks a ton.

  7. this is to fast for my taste, shit was intense!

  8. Talk about a handicap, drinking beer while playing Chess. No wonder why he lost (lol). Williams has always been a laugh.

Good win and good vid, John. The board on the upper part of the vid is nice and well done too.

  9. this is so frustrating to watch for some reason.

  10. Another amazing game by my two favorite grandmasters 🙂

  12. I don't understand why John sacrificed his rook mid game. Im confident that is not a mistake.

  13. I would love to see a regular rivals match between these guys. I think practicing against John's play style would be excellent for Simon's game and vice versa.

  14. visually so compelling. great video, and great to see two pals playing. way to go John

  15. reminds me of those idiots who think they are stronger than me and just attack before developing and end up losing one piece after another and then they leave the game without resigning. chess dot com idiots

  16. 4:15 If Bxe5 or Nxe5, does white actually have a useful discovered attack on black's queen? I don't see it.

  17. Love the way this is presented: the guys playing are audible and visible, no edits, one digital board showing the actual game, no commentators with a distracting analysis-board, this is perfect.

  18. Love to see you Live play after seeing you always on Chess. com videos

  19. Simon in mid game: Lemme… Trade… That… FUCKING… QUEEENNNN!!!!

  20. Fantastic save by John. His queenside was teetering…but Harry took matters in his own hands on the kingside.

  21. Nice comeback, if it was a comeback. I'm not good enough to evaluate but it seems John lost the exchange early and then fought back. It was fun to see you joking with one another.

  22. Good wholesome down to earth chess battle by two master gentlemen of the game. Most enjoyable. How I long to play over the board once again.Great stuff! Thank you.

  23. Im more impressed he doesn’t spill his beer.

  24. I can't find a game that Simon actually wins for a change?

  25. I thought you were loosing when exchange down what comeback .
